Are vintage guns a good investment? ›

High-value collectibles like fine art, classic cars, and vintage timepieces have been outperforming traditional investments, and firearms are a part of that trend.

Under the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, any cartridge firearm made in or before 1898 ("pre-1899") is classified as an "antique", and is generally outside of Federal jurisdiction, as administered and enforced by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE).

Make & model, condition, rarity, history or art? These are the five factors that tend to appeal to collectors, and which determine the value of collectible guns.

For an older gun to be worth more than a new similar model, it must be desirable, rare and in great condition. If it's an old Colt revolver, a Winchester lever action, a high-quality double-barrel shotgun or something of the like, it could be very valuable.

Most states exempt antique firearms from the general licensing and ownership requirements to legally own modern firearms. However, each state applies this exception in different ways, and may define "antique firearm" differently. Under federal law, an antique firearm is any firearm produced before 1898.

A regulation implementing federal firearms laws, 27 CFR § 478.11, defines curio or relic (C&R) firearms as those which are of special interest to collectors by reason of some quality other than is associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or defensive weapons.
