Spicy Blueberry Sauce (2024)

This Spicy Blueberry Sauce will have your tastebuds doing a happy dance. Yes, it finishes with a bit of a kick, but it is perfectly tempered by the sweetness of the blueberries and maple syrup.

Spicy Blueberry Sauce (1)

This recipe was actually inspired by my friend George who wanted me to recreate a spicy blueberry glaze that he had on some chicken wings when he visited Maine. He’s already used it in a number of grilling projects, including glazing ribs and a bacon wrapped pork tenderloin. I do hope some of the serving suggestions (both here and below) will inspire you to give this Spicy Blueberry Sauce a chance.

Since you can use either fresh or frozen blueberries in this sauce recipe, you don’t have to wait until blueberry season to make it. You can enjoy this deliciously sweet and spicy treat any time of the year.

Don’t let the spice scare you. It’s actually a very mild spice that hits the end notes of each bite. I love the chipotle spice because it adds a bit of smokiness to the sauce that makes it perfect for use in savory applications while still being suitable for desserts. See below for ideas to use blueberry glaze in both savory and sweet recipes.

Not only do I love how easy this homemade blueberry sauce is to make, I also love knowing exactly what is in my food. In this case, maple syrup replaces the typical refined sugar found in most sauces and glazes which makes me feel good about serving it. Whether you use is as a sauce or glaze, I’m sure you will love it as well.

FAQs:

What if I don’t like spicy?Simple, just omit the chipotle powder. You’ll be left with a delicious blueberry glaze that is perfect for an unlimited array of uses. See a sampling of serving suggestions below.

Do I have to use bourbon?Nope, you could simply increase the water content. Personally, I like the bourbon because it contributes to the depth of flavor and helps provide a bit of the smokiness (along with the chipotle spice). The alcohol cooks off as the bourbon is heated, so there are no intoxicating properties to this sauce.

How do I store blueberry sauce?Store any leftover portion in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Can I freeze homemade blueberry sauce?Absolutely, simply portion it into airtight containers and freeze for up to three months. To use, thaw overnight in the fridge, and then bring to room temperature, or gently reheat if serving warm.

HOW TO PREPARE SPICY BLUEBERRY SAUCE:

This recipe couldn’t be easier to prepare.

Spicy Blueberry Sauce (3)

You will need these ingredients ⇧

  • Add the blueberries, maple syrup, bourbon, one cup water, chipotle powder, and salt to a heavy bottomed pan over medium-high heat. Heat until the blueberries become soft enough to mash (about 10-15 minutes), and mash them up with the back of a spoon or potato masher. Reduce heat to medium-low, and stir occasionally while blueberries continue to break down.
  • Mix the two tablespoons cold water with the cornstarch. Pour into the blueberry sauce, and stir to combine. Cook about five more minutes as the sauce thickens. (Sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.) Stir in two tablespoons butter before removing from heat for an extra rich sauce.
  • I like a few chunks of blueberries in my sauce, but if your family prefers a smoother sauce, simply use an immersion blender to blend up any blueberry chunks. Or, blend small amounts at a time in a stand blender after allowing to cool. Always use extreme caution when blending hot liquids in a blender. Blend only small amounts at a time.

RECIPE NOTES:

  • If you don’t want any spice in your glaze, simply omit the chipotle powder. Try adding lemon juice to add a bit of tartness when using to top baked goods.
  • You can also add more savory notes by adding herbs such as rosemary, thyme, or sage.
  • Fresh or frozen blueberries can be used for this recipe. If using frozen blueberries, the cook time will increase by a few minutes.
  • I like to use a heavy bottomed pan, such as my Dutch oven, for recipes like this.
  • Use a good quality pure maple syrup for the best results.
